An east Auckland theatre is upping the suspense with its subsequent stage manufacturing, which centres on a blind girl pressured into survival mode throughout a house invasion.
Carlos Lehmann directs Howick Little Theatre’s manufacturing of the stage thriller Wait Till Darkish.
The story is written by critically acclaimed English playwright Frederick Knott and set in 1944 New York Metropolis.
Tailored for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher, the theatre says it’s a “suspense-filled, high-stakes thriller that thrusts the viewers into the center of an exhilarating and harmful recreation of cat and mouse”.
The story centres on the fictional character Susan Hendrix, performed by Julia Kellett.
She’s a younger blind girl residing in Greenwich Village who finds her unusual life upended via a fastidiously constructed deception by a crew of conmen led by the sinister Harry Roat, performed by Cameron Smith.
The forged is accomplished by Sergeant Carlino, an ex-police officer turned small-time grifter, performed by Karl Fleet; Mike Talman, an enthralling however secretive previous household good friend, performed by Bruno Batistela; Sam Hendrix, the dutiful husband, performed by Grae Minors; and Gloria, a younger teenager in an upstairs condominium, performed by Nicole Johnson.
The theatre says the play delves into themes of vulnerability and private braveness, as stress between “predator and prey” steadily improve.
Susan is pressured to recognise her blindness may be the important thing to her escape and provide an ideal alternative to show the tables on the boys who’ve invaded her residence.
Lehmann says he’s excited to current the season as his first main-house manufacturing on the theatre.
“The opening scene of the play is what grabbed my consideration, and from there I used to be hooked.
“The suspense and drama that unfold satisfied me this might be an excellent manufacturing.
“Whereas Wait Till Darkish acts as a type of time machine to the previous, it’s not closely depending on its interval setting.
“Each the plot and characters might simply match into at this time’s world, with just a few minor tweaks.”
